A definition of Sexist obtained from the Merriam-Webster online dictionary. 1 : prejudice or discrimination based on sex;
especially : discrimination against women Based on the first definition, yes, the OGFHC is sexist. One of the initial goals of the OGFHC was to create a male members only club. By all means, the OGFHC discriminates against people based on sex. However, the OGFHC does not adhere very well to the second definition. While an argument could be created in which the OGFHC is shown to encourage men to behave as stereotypical men and women to behave as stereotypical women, such an argument would be weak and ultimately wrong. The OGFHC is predominantly concerned with defeating stereotypes dealing with male facial hair rather then perpetuating stereotypes of either male or female facial hair. With all that said, I would now like to ask another question. Is being sexist in the kinds of ways which the OGFHC is sexist really that bad? My answer to that question is no. While the OGFHC does discriminate against woman, it does so in a non-destructive way. The club is not intent on seeing every woman completely clean shaven. If a woman wants to grow some facial hair, then she should go for it. The OGFHC would likely be proud of her for accomplishing such a rare feat. However, when it comes to membership, the OGFHC is only looking for men, hence the "gentlemen" part of the club name. We feel that restricting the club to men will achieve a greater sense of camaraderie amongst members. That is not to say that woman shouldn't be a part of a facial hair club. Quite the contrary, we think woman should have a facial hair club. In fact, if the demand were great enough, we may even be inclined to found a female only club (of course we would be prohibited from becoming members). Feel free to respond to this explanation with you're own comments/opinions. While we think what we've said is true, we are not so arrogant to believe that we can't be wrong. However, I don't want to hear anything like "The OGFHC is wrong because they're too stupid to have flawless spelling or grammar." Other than that, send in your opinions. I hope this has cleared up any questions involving the sexist nature of the OGFHC. Contact Me: Site Creator | ||
